FPS is more than just a number — different frame rates produce fundamentally different experiences. Here is how each target FPS level feels and what hardware is required to achieve it.
Measures frames per second using requestAnimationFrame() timestamps. Live FPS updates every second; average FPS builds over the entire test session. Average is more representative than any single live reading.
The worst 1% and 0.1% of frame rate samples. These reveal micro-stutters that averages hide — a system with 120 avg FPS but 20 FPS 1% lows will feel choppy. Professional benchmarks always report 1% lows alongside averages.
The milliseconds required to render each frame. At 60 FPS, each frame should take 16.7ms. At 120 FPS, 8.3ms. Consistent frame time feels smoother than equal average FPS with inconsistent timing — this is the true smoothness metric.
Standard deviation of frame times — how much frame timing varies from frame to frame. Under 2ms is excellent. 2–5ms is acceptable. Above 8ms causes visible judder even when average FPS looks fine. Low jitter = smooth, consistent motion.
Percentage of frames delivered within 20% of average frame time. 95%+ is excellent — most frames are timed consistently. Below 80% means visible stuttering. 100% means perfectly smooth, metronomic frame delivery throughout the session.
A composite metric combining average FPS, stability percentage, and jitter. 600+ is excellent. 400–599 is good. 200–399 is acceptable. Below 200 indicates performance issues. Compare before and after system changes to measure the actual impact.
Before testing, verify that hardware acceleration is enabled in your browser. In Chrome: Settings → System → "Use graphics acceleration when available" → Enable. In Edge: Settings → System → "Use hardware acceleration when available". Without GPU acceleration, your browser renders entirely on the CPU and scores will be significantly lower than your device's actual capability.
Close all other browser tabs and any background applications (Discord, Spotify, browser extensions) before testing for a clean baseline. Other tabs share the same GPU render thread as this tool. Each additional active tab can reduce measured FPS by 5–20%. A clean test with only this tab open shows your device's true ceiling.
Start with the Light load and let it run for 30 seconds to establish a baseline. Then increase to Medium, Heavy, and Extreme. Watch how your FPS and frame time change under increasing load. A system that maintains 60+ FPS on Heavy load has good GPU rendering capability. Dropping below 30 FPS on Medium suggests integrated graphics or a mobile device.
Focus on Average FPS for a general rating, 1% Low to diagnose stuttering, Frame Time for smoothness quality, and Stability % for consistency. The Performance Score summarises all metrics into a single number. 600+ on Medium load means your system can run most modern games smoothly at 1080p. Below 200 on Light load suggests graphics driver or hardware acceleration issues.
Outdated GPU drivers are the single most common cause of low FPS and instability. NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel release optimisation updates for specific games. Always install the latest driver before benchmarking or testing — a driver update alone can improve FPS by 10–30% on specific titles.
Shadows, ambient occlusion, global illumination, and anti-aliasing are the most GPU-expensive settings. Reducing these from Ultra to High or Medium often gains 20–40% FPS with minimal visual impact. Ray tracing at 4K is the single most performance-intensive setting in modern games.
Windows power plans throttle your CPU and GPU to save power. Set your power plan to High Performance (Control Panel → Power Options) or Ultimate Performance. On laptops, plug in during gaming — battery-saving mode can cut performance in half. This alone adds 15–25% FPS on laptops.
NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS are AI upscaling technologies that render the game at a lower resolution internally and upscale to your native resolution — achieving near-native visual quality at a fraction of the GPU cost. Enabling DLSS Quality mode can double FPS with minimal perceptible quality loss.
Rendering more FPS than your monitor can display wastes GPU resources and generates excess heat. Use RTSS or in-game limiters to cap FPS at your monitor's refresh rate (60/120/144/240Hz). This stabilises frame time, reduces heat, and often improves 1% lows — reducing visual micro-stutter.
When your CPU or GPU overheats (typically 90°C+), it automatically reduces clock speeds to protect components — dropping FPS by 30–50%. Monitor temperatures with GPU-Z or HWInfo64 while gaming. If you see temperatures above 90°C alongside FPS drops, cleaning your heatsink and replacing thermal paste will restore full performance.
