Common Issues — Self-Help Troubleshooting

Fix Common Controller Problems Yourself

Many of the most common issues with the controller tester have simple, quick fixes. Try these steps before opening a support ticket.

🔌
Controller Not Detected by the Tester
Slot stays empty after connecting
1
Press any button on your controller after connecting — the browser Gamepad API requires at least one button press before registering the device.
2
Refresh the page with the controller already plugged in or paired, then press a button.
3
Switch to Chrome browser — it has the widest Gamepad API support. Firefox and Edge also work but less consistently with some controllers.
4
Close companion software (Razer Synapse, Logitech G HUB, Xbox Accessories) — these can hold an exclusive HID lock preventing browser detection.
5
Try a different USB port — USB 3.0 ports can interfere with 2.4GHz wireless receivers. Try a USB 2.0 port or plug directly without a hub.
🔄
Stick Drift Showing in the Tester
Axis values non-zero when stick is released
1
Place the controller flat on a table and release both sticks fully. Values within ±0.02 are normal hardware noise — not true drift.
2
Values 0.02–0.05: Minimal — games compensate automatically. Monitor over time. No immediate action needed.
3
Values 0.05–0.10: Early drift — try compressed air under the stick cap and IPA cleaning spray around the stick base.
4
Values above 0.10: Confirmed drift — thumbstick module replacement is required. Parts cost $3–8 and repair guides are available for all major controllers.
5
PS5 DualSense / Nintendo Switch — both have manufacturer warranty programs covering drift. Submit a warranty claim before self-repairing.
💀
Button Not Registering in the Tester
Button stays grey / shows 0.00 on press
1
Press firmly — some buttons require a deliberate press, especially triggers which need to be fully depressed to register above 0.00.
2
Try a different browser — some button events are handled differently across browsers. Chrome is recommended for most accurate button detection.
3
Check the event log at the bottom of the tester — if the button fires in the log but not on the visual grid, report this as a UI bug to our team.
4
Clean the button contact with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud under the keycap if the button also fails in other applications.
📳
Vibration Not Working
Motor test fires but no rumble felt
1
Use Chrome or Edge browser — Firefox has very limited Vibration API support and vibration will not activate in most Firefox versions.
2
Charge your controller fully — PS4, PS5, and most wireless controllers disable vibration below 15–20% battery to save power.
3
Connect via USB — some controllers (especially Nintendo Switch Pro) require a wired USB connection for vibration API access.
4
Test each motor independently in the Vibration tab. If only one motor fires, the other motor is likely mechanically damaged and needs replacement.

Support FAQs

Frequently Asked Support Questions

Is live support really available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
Yes — Gamepad Tester provides live chat support around the clock, including weekends and public holidays. Our global team of support engineers is distributed across time zones to ensure someone is always available. Average live chat response time is under 4 minutes. Email support is handled during business hours Monday through Friday, with weekend emails answered on the next business day. The live chat widget in the bottom-right corner connects you to a real team member, not an automated bot.
What information should I include in my support request?
For the fastest resolution, include: your controller model and manufacturer (e.g. PS5 DualSense, Xbox Series X), your connection method (USB or Bluetooth), your browser name and version (e.g. Chrome 124), your operating system (e.g. Windows 11), and a clear description of what is happening versus what you expected to happen. For visual issues or UI bugs, a screenshot is extremely helpful. For controller detection issues, note whether the controller appears in your OS device settings — this helps us determine whether the problem is in the browser Gamepad API or the hardware connection itself.
My controller works in games but not in the Gamepad Tester — why?
Games typically use the operating system's native gamepad driver — not the browser Gamepad API. A controller can work perfectly in Steam, Xbox Game Bar, or a game while not being detected by a browser-based tool because of how browsers sandbox hardware access. The most common causes are: the browser requires a button press to register the device (press any button on the controller after connecting), companion software holding an exclusive HID lock, or the controller being in a mode (e.g. DirectInput) that the browser's Gamepad API does not fully support. Our team can diagnose the exact cause for your specific controller if these steps do not resolve it.
Can you help me fix stick drift on my specific controller?
Yes — controller-specific stick drift diagnosis and repair guidance is one of the most common things we help with. Once you tell us your controller model, how much drift you are seeing in the tester (the exact axis values at rest), and how long the drift has been present, we can tell you whether cleaning is likely to fix it, whether the thumbstick module needs replacement, or whether your manufacturer's warranty programme covers the issue. PS5 DualSense and Nintendo Joy-Con drift are both covered by extended warranty in many regions — we will tell you exactly how to submit that claim.
Does Gamepad Tester support PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers?
PS3 DualShock 3 and Xbox 360 controllers have limited browser Gamepad API support. PS3 controllers require a USB connection (not Bluetooth) and may need additional drivers on Windows. Xbox 360 controllers require the official Xbox 360 Controller Driver for Windows, which is built into Windows 10 and later. On macOS, a third-party driver like Joystick Doctor may be required. Once the OS recognises the controller, press any button and it should appear in the tester. Button mapping may differ from the standard layout. Contact our live chat if you need help getting an older controller detected.
How do I report a bug in the Gamepad Tester tools?
The fastest way to report a bug is via our live chat — describe what happened and which tool was affected, and our engineers can investigate immediately. For more detailed bug reports (especially intermittent issues), use the contact form and select Bug Report as the topic. Please include your browser, OS, controller, and a step-by-step description of how to reproduce the bug. Screenshots or screen recordings are very helpful for visual bugs. All reported bugs are logged, triaged, and prioritised by severity — critical bugs affecting core tool function are addressed within 24 hours.
